Book Notes by John December
"Streets are the lifeblood of our communities and the foundation of our urban economies." p. xi.
This book shows how streets can be used to improve communities and accommodate many different
modes of transit through street design elements and design strategies.
The main strength of this book is it acts as a permission slip for cities to be able to move
away from car-oriented streets at all costs and to enact specific strategies to help pedestrians,
bicyclists, transit users, and cars.
Generously illustrated with detailed
diagrams of
before-and-after diagrams of intersections as well as photographs, this book
shows how desolate streets where only car drivers dare go can be transformed into streets
usable to a wider range of modes and users.
