Assignment: Information Hunt

The purpose of this assignment is sharpen your skills in searching for information on the Internet and in documenting and citing Internet information sources and methods.

The Assignment

For security and administrative reasons, you must use the computer account supplied to you by the University to email your assignment--failure to do so will result in your assignment not being graded. UW-Milwaukee students can use panthermail.uwm.edu.

For this assignment, you will be given two missions. Each mission, consists of three questions. You will use the Internet to find the answers to these questions and cite your sources as well as cite your search sources and methods.

These missions will challenge you to be able to not only search for information on the Internet (this is actually very easy to do), but you must additionally:

  1. Locate, evaluate, collect, and integrate information you find on the Internet;
  2. Answer questions in a usable and understandable way;
  3. Cite the source of where on the Internet you found the information in your answer; and
  4. Document search sources and methods by identifying Web sites or search engines or methods you used to find the answer.
Together, these skills will make your Internet searching skills more precise and sophisticated.

If you already know the answer to one of these questions, find out information on the Internet to also show the answer.

To do this assignment, use your campus Web-based email account, start a draft message, copy and paste all the text in this template file into that draft mail message, and then type in your answers to the questions into the mail message. When completed, use these procedures for turning in your assignment.

Notes on Your Answers

In each of your answers you must do the following:
  1. ANSWER: State your answer in the form of a easily-readable information list, chart, or sentences. Be very specific in your answer. For example, don't answer vaguely "a net cafe" in response to the question "Where are some places in Stockholm that you could log into the Internet to get your mail?" Instead, give me the name and street address of the Net cafe(s) where you could do this. If the question asks a distance to be given in meters, give that distance in meters, not in some other units.
  2. CITATION: List the full URL(s) of the Web page(s) that gave you facts listed in your answer. I should be able to follow these URL(s) and be able to see the information in your answer. I will not guess the URL where you found the answer. You are required to physically write down these URL(s) in your assignment, or you will lose points.
  3. SEARCH SOURCES AND METHODS: Describe the kinds of searches you did and give the URLs of Web pages or Web sites that helped you with information or links to get your answer. If you used no other Web pages other than those listed in your CITATION to find your answer, explain. For example, if you used no other Web pages or sites, you could say, "I have personal knowledge of the exact URL that gave me the answer, so I didn't have to consult any other Web page or site." You are also required to write down any of these URL(s) in your assignment, or you will lose points. I will not guess the search sources and methods you used. If the search sources and methods are not physically written down in your assignment in a form that I can read, you will lose points.

The purpose of citing information on the Internet is to help the person using the information find the same information and verify it. Citations also help the information user evaluate the value and believablility of the information. To present information that you found on the Internet without citation (in the form of URLs) is not a good practice--it is analogous to citing information you used in a technical report as coming from "some book in some library somewhere."

Providing documentation of your sources and methods by writing out the URLs of Web pages or Web sites that helped you find information for an answer is important because this helps someone else do a new search or locate alternate information. Since it may be possible that the URL where you find the answer to a question moves, gets deleted, is renamed, or becomes unavailable at any time, these sources and methods URLs can be used to locate a different answer. These sources and methods also help show how thorough and complete your search for the answer was.

Come up with the best answer you can find. Include some alternatives if you feel your first answer isn't quite meeting the needs of the question.

Vague, non-specific, or incomplete answers will not receive full credit. But you will get partial credit or full credit for a good, specific answer, so don't miss the assignment deadline looking for a perfect answer.

If you already know the answer to one of these questions off the top of your head, still find the information on the Internet that shows the answer.

Tip: as you do your search, cut and paste URLs of sites into your assignment, in the SOURCES AND METHODS section, so that you have a record of what helpful sites you visited. Cut and paste the entire URL of the Web page that gave you the answer.
