The Web is essentially a communications medium, providing a way for organizations, individuals, and groups to connect in a variety of ways. The applications discussed in the other chapters in this part reflect this--they all show examples of the Web as a communications tool. In this chapter, we'll examine this aspect of the Web in more detail by looking at a variety of applications. We'll explore how the Web can be used for communication in various contexts---individual, group, organizational, mass publishing, and specialized areas such as surveillance and information.
